Licorice Root

FROM NATURE

Licorice Root

Name Licorice Root
Key Benefits Anti-inflammatory, Formula Harmonizer, Skin Protection

Licorice root is recorded in the Donguibogam as an herb that “resolves all medicinal toxicity,” neutralizing the harsh side effects of stronger herbs while preserving their benefits. In traditional Korean medicine, there is a saying: 十方九草 (sipbang-gucho)—nine out of ten prescriptions contain licorice. It is the only herb honored with the title Gukro (國老), meaning “National Elder,” symbolizing its role as the supreme harmonizer.

Its signature compound, glycyrrhizin, modulates inflammatory pathways including NF-κB, producing cortisol-like anti-inflammatory effects that soothe irritated skin. As an amphiphilic saponin, glycyrrhizin also acts as a natural surfactant, helping other active compounds dissolve and work together more effectively. Glabridin inhibits tyrosinase to help brighten and even out skin tone, while licochalcone A has been shown to reduce UV-induced redness and improve skin barrier function.
